We designed a series of Japanese language arts textbooks for use in Japan’s elementary schools. Through the power of language, children can learn to interact with one another and with nature, building a richer future world. With the guiding concept of “expanding curiosity,” we aimed to create textbooks in which dynamic encounters with new words make children want to read on to the next page. We reviewed and designed the entire textbook, organizing the content, formatting the text, assigning colors and icons, and selecting illustrators. The cover portrays children playing with gigantic versions of familiar motifs, expressing the principle behind the textbook: empowered by words, we can become an ant’s eye, an elephant’s eye, and even fly into space.
