What strengths do we, as a Japanese design agency, bring to the table? Is it our distinctive minimalist aesthetic that seemingly transcends cultural boundaries? Or perhaps our stubborn commitment to perfection, down to the smallest detail? For me, it’s about our refined and responsive creative process.
I believe Japanese designs excel in three key areas: detail, quality, and function. Having worked in the US for a few years now, I’m struck by the contrasting creative approaches here. There’s a palpable drive to infuse leadership, diversity, and agility into the creative process.
Western designs, I’ve noticed, inhabit confidence. Designers are charged to lead the creative process, taking their clients’ needs and pushing the envelope. The result can at times appear a bit rough around the edges. But that’s not a bad thing as it allows for greater agility. I’m particularly interested in this embrace of iteration. Unlike in Japan, where we pursue relentless perfection, Western design is goal oriented. Get the job done, and the rest will follow.

This awareness has helped me blend Japanese precision with Western agility, forming the core of NDCLA’s unique value proposition in the global design market. Our clients come to us with a brand that they hope to expand to a global audience. As a culturally agile creative agency, we work holistically with our clients, marrying Western design processes of defining the clients’ vision with Japanese approaches to clean and meticulous brand communication strategies. The result? A bold, articulate and refined brand visibility. I firmly believe that tapping into the lifestyle our clients embody is critical for meaningful design. It’s what I call getting to “the heart of design.”
